Calendar raises money for hospice
Following a recent family holiday to Kruger Park in South Africa, local lady Nicky Fower from Gomeldon, was so delighted with her photographs she decided to put them to good use and produced a stunning calendar showcasing the wildlife she snapped. A keen amateur photographer, the photos are of the highest quality and really capture the essence of the magnificent national park.
With help from local businesses who helped with the advertising and printing of the calendars Nicky was ready to raise as much as she could for Salisbury Hospicecare Trust. Nicky’s father, Keith Chapman, went around the Salisbury area while Nicky conce ntrated on the Gomeldon and Porton areas. 300 calendars were produced and all were sold. Nicky and Keith were delighted by the response of local people many of whom gave additional donations to support the work of the hospice. ANNUAL MEETING - plans for the future
At the Annual Meeting of the Salisbury Hospicecare Trust held at Salisbury Hospice on 15 July the Chairman, Dr Shaun McGee, reported on significant developments during the past year and key decisions made. Dr McGee explained "As the Salisbury Hospicecare Trust approaches its 30th anniversary it faces new challenges to its role of maintaining and developing specialist Palliative Care services based at Salisbury Hospice. In the past ten years the fundraising requirement of the charity has grown from £370,000 to over £1m each year. The fundamental changes envisaged for the NHS and the uncertain economic climate demand a forward looking strategic approach."
Continuing this theme he said "For this reason the Trustees undertook a complete review, with professional guidance, of the workings of the charity. As a result, the Trustees have decided to appoint a Senior Executive Officer to be responsible for all operational aspects of the charity. This person will have important links with the clinical service but will not have clinical responsibilities, and will report directly to the Trustees. The strategic vision of the development of specialist palliative c ar e services in the Salisbury area will, going forward, require a robust business plan and far reaching ambitious fundraising strategy. This appointment is viewed as central to delivering this vision to ensure that the needs and interests of patients and t heir families continue to be served."

Grant received for refurbishment.
Salisbury Hospice has received a grant of £47,927, to pay for the refurbishment of the In Patient Unit Day room and Terrace Room. The grant was made through Help the Hospices and was made by the Department of Health’s End of Life Care Strategy as part of a national payment of £40m made to local Hospices throughout the country.
Director of Public Health and Well-Being for Wiltshire, Maggie Rae, said: “Good end-of-life care means making sure people get the absolute best care to ensure they live a good quality life right up until the moment they die, that their family and friends know they have had the absolute best care, and that we make what can oft en be a difficult time as pain-free and worry-free as possible. “A good physical environment can make a huge difference in how people experience their life during the last stages, and can have a huge impact on their final moments and the memories they leave behind. This grant will help local hospices to ensure they have the facilities and equipment to ensure people can live well until the very end of their lives.”

CARRY ON FUNDRAISING
Laughter has been at the centre of two fundraising events held this year. The Comedy Night, held at Milford Hall Hotel, raised over £1,000. This was the second year that Andrew Watts, himself a professional comedian, arranged the night, attracting a stro ng team of performers well known on the national comedy scene. A full house had a good night out.
Meanwhile Parkwood Health & Fitness Club played host to a 12 hour swimming and rowing session. Organised by David Roycroft and Sara Hankins 16 other Parkwood members took part. As part of their fundraising a music evening at the Red Lion and a sponsored A crylic Nail session (but for men!) was held at the Wyndham Arms. Great fun. In total over £4,500 was raised. Sadly David's wife, Jenny, died just days before the events but David and his family continued with the arrangements. Thank you.
