Fundraising and Volunteering

Volunteers are an important element of the work of Salisbury Hospice, augmenting the work of the professional nursing staff. Currently over a hundred people give their time to help in a variety of ways. New volunteers are always needed and full training is given.

In-Patient Care

Examples of help given include:

  • attending to patients needs
  • acting as couriers
  • manning the reception desk
  • providing transport
  • helping in the Peter Gillam Support Centre
  • giving general clerical & fundraising assistance
  • calling all gardeners! Another important role the volunteers take on is the maintenance of the hospice's important wildlife garden. Enthusiasm and some gardening ability are the main requirements.

Fundraising

Each year a large team of local fundraisers raise approximately £200,000 within the Salisbury area through fundraising activities.

Examples of help given include:

  • organising an event eg coffee morning, disco, open garden, concert etc.
  • taking part in a sponsored activity eg funs runs, Midnight Walk, marathons.
  • helping to distribute and display publicity
  • corporate sponsorship of Salisbury Hospice events.
  • help manning charity stalls at local shows
  • stewarding Salisbury Hospice events

Fundraising

The Admiral and The Easter Bunny Stall helpers in Salisbury Guildhall

Throughout the year there are many opportunities to support or help our fundraising activities. If you want to organise your own event we can help with publicity, media contact, sponsor forms, friendly suppliers etc - just ask! See our current list of events.

We are always glad of helpers to man stalls at community and Salisbury Hospice events - also drivers who can provide occasional collection and delivery help with a car or van.

If you have an idea for an event and would like to talk about it please contact Celia or Sue on 01722 416 353 or email fundraising@salisburyhospicecare.co.uk - also contact Celia or Sue if you would like to help as a volunteer.

For some public events we need prominent sites for posters and flyers. Please contact the charity office 01722 416353 fundraising@salisburyhospicecare.co.uk if you can help with such publicity.

Sponsored activities

In the past we have had a wide range of sponsored activities - ranging from head shaving, a silence, dance marathon, walks and cycle rides to a sponsored trek to the North Pole and a triathlon in New Zealand! All of them raise vital funds for Salisbury Hospice. A useful way to get as much money as possible is to register your activity on www.justgiving.com/salhospice.

Locally The Figsbury Challenge is held in April. Organised in association with the Winterbourne Earls PTA this is a 5k multi terrain run from Winterbourne Earls School up to the Iron Age hill side fort at Figsbury and back.

The Salisbury Hospice and Salisbury Journal Midnight Walk held on the first Saturday of June is a great experience. In 2011 over 450 walkers took part. More details.

On August Bank Holiday Sunday there is the Annual Waterside Walk from Downton to Salisbury Hospice passing through the grounds of Longford Castle - a route not usually open to members of the public. The full route is approximately 5 miles and is a great event for all ages, dogs are also welcome!

National events:
We have guaranteed places in the British 10k race in central London (July) www.thebritish10klondon.co.uk. Transport is arranged. Contact Sue Turnbull. We do not have guaranteed places in the London Marathon (April) - our runners get their places through being lucky in the annual ballot - www.london-marathon.co.uk. There are opportunities to undertake a sponsored activity nationally and internationally. Through our connections with umbrella organisation Help the Hospices we can arrange for people to take part in events such as the Great North/South Runs and the New York Marathon. Visit www.hospicerunners.org.uk , www.charity-challenge.com and www.charitychallenge.com as a starting point to raise money for Salisbury Hospicecare.
